Lighting a series of artworks for immersive after dark visitor experience at Kew Gardens

The Project

Inspired by past visits to Kew Gardens and particularly the architecture of the Palm House, iconic artist Dale Chihuly has returned with new exhibition ‘Chihuly: Reflections on nature’ for 2019.

Using the stunning backdrop of Kew’s biodiverse grounds, the series of unique glass
artworks includes pieces never-before showcased in the UK.

Chihuly Nights sees these installations transformed for an immersive visitor experience, by night.

The Brief

In order to do justice to the exquisite pieces on display and enhance these for optimum viewing after dark, the lighting solution was of crucial importance. Having previously delivered a diverse range of interior and exterior projects at Kew Gardens, White Light (WL) was the supplier of choice for Chihuly Nights

The Delivery

WL’s Project Manager Luke Hance worked closely with Chihuly Studio’s Lighting Designer Steven Cochran. Luke comments: “The vast sculptures are rigged in numerous indoor and outdoor sites around Kew Gardens and for some of these, a lack of nearby power sources posed a challenge at the outset. To resolve this, we developed a custom-made battery pack for the fixtures. Utilising our inventory of IP rated equipment and with onsite system testing, we were able to supply a technical solution to bring Steven’s vision to life.”

““With WL’s knowledge of our site logistics and extensive experience of delivering production solutions for our other public events, they were the expert choice for this project. They worked in seamless collaboration with the Chihuly Studio and the lighting elements have really heightened the Chihuly Nights experience for our visitors.””
