Based in Hammersmith, West London, Latymer Upper School is London’s leading fully co-educational school. It recently built a brand-new, state-of-the-art Sports Centre, as well as refurbished their existing Sports Hall. WL was approached to oversee the technical installation in each space.
Jason Larcombe, WL’s Project Manager, comments: “The brief was to offer a theatrical solution to the lighting of the buildings. We were approached at the beginning of the project and worked closely with the architects and consultants to ensure that we could incorporate our system into theirs”.
WL worked specifically in two areas: the Sports Centre and the Sports Hall. The company was responsible for creating the technical design and, after frequent visits to the site, decided which technology would fulfil the brief and get the most out of each space.
The Sports Centre
Within the newly-built Sports Centre, there are three main spaces: the Swimming Pool, the Studios and the Gym. Due to the Swimming Pool being an area of high humidity, WL opted for 22x Studio Due ARCHIBARS 100 DRS. These were IP rated and have inter-changeable colours, creating a variety of mood settings. In Studios 1 - 3, which can used for anything from performance spaces to examination halls, WL drew on 48 x ChromaQ AR111 and 9 x ChromaZone CZ6-100C. This allowed for maximum flexbility in each room.
The Sports Hall
The Sports Hall required a rigging system to facilitate the various events taking place within the space. WL had to ensure that the roof could take the weight of any motors and trusses being installed. They also had to integrate their design with the existing overhead heating. As a result, they drew on a series of LTM LoadGuard Motors, suspended from custom-built Lindapter brackets. These were affixed to Prolyte H30V trusses. Each motor was controlled via a Pickle Controller, connected to a Low Level Facility Panel.
“For years now, we have outsourced and hired technical equipment. With the Sports Centre being built, it made sense to invest in the latest equipment for these new facilities. As we have previously rented equipment from WL, they were the natural choice to approach for the installation. We were completely confident in their ability to deliver exactly what was required and we’re delighted with the potential each space now has”.
