   The three Monteverdi ensembles – The Monteverdi Choir, English Baroque Soloists and Orchestre Revolutionnaire et Romantique – are a leading force on the international music scene. World-class musicians from across the globe come together to share the distinct vision of Founder and Artistic Director Sir John Eliot Gardiner in ground-breaking projects. Last year, the Choir and Orchestras embarked on an international tour across Europe and the US. This culminated in a final concert at the V & A Museum’s Raphael Gallery and White Light provided the technical support.

   The final concert was overseen by the Monteverdi Choir & Orchestras production personnel, who comments: “This concluding concert was the only London date for the Monteverdi 450 Tour so we wanted to make it an unforgettable occasion. It was also a celebration of 50 years since Sir John Eliot Gardiner first conducted at the V&A with his newly formed Monteverdi Choir to mark the Venetian master’s 400^th anniversary in 1967”.

   As an approved supplier to the V&A Museum, WL was approved to provide the production support. WL’s Project Manager Phil Gladman comments: “Our role on the evening was to provide the lighting, PA system, rigging and staging for the concert. We also worked closely with the lighting designer Rick Fisher to ensure we brought his creative vision to life”.

   The evening offered a fully immersive event in which guests entered the Museum and walked around the various spaces enjoying seemingly impromptu performances from the Monteverdi Choir & Orchestra performers. WL was responsible for lighting each one. Phil explains: “These promenade performances around the museum were almost like pop-up shows. Along with uplighters, we also drew on guerrilla lighting to ensure each performer had complete coverage in their various positions”.

   The promenade ‘pop-up’ performances were part of the build up to the final performance of the evening within the Raphael Gallery, which was a complete sell out. WL had to provide the complete staging for the Choir and Orchestras. Phil states: “In the Raphael, we supplied a 9 x 8m deep stage on which the performances could take place. The stage needed to be vast in order to fit all of the musicians on and literally took up half of the room. We had to arrive at 8am the previous morning simply to store it all. On the show day itself, we arrived at 6am and it took three hours to construct”.

   

   Across the evening, WL drew on CORE Lighting ColourPoints for uplighting along with Chroma-Q Color Force 72 Battens. The company also supplied ETC Source 4 Profiles and Elation SixPARS; all of which were controlled via an ETC Ion 1K Console. WL also supplied the audio reinforcement, which included EMS121 Loudspeakers and an A&H QU-24 sound-desk.

   The sell-out event was a huge success and had more than 400 people in attendance in the Raphael Gallery, with even more following the pop-up events around the museum.

   Phil adds: “It was fantastic to work in a venue such as the V&A and turn it into an immersive environment. From the bespoke lighting to the custom-made staging, this project showcased the wide range of production support we’re able to offer our clients”.

   The team at Monteverdi Choir & Orchestras stated: “We were delighted with the service we received from WL and for all their help in making the final Monteverdi concert an unforgettable evening”.

   The IAAF World Championships London 2017 were the biggest sporting event in the world this year and the biggest event to be held at the London Stadium since the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. With this being the first time the Championships have ever been held in the UK, the event witnessed the retirement of legendary sprinter Usain Bolt and the major championship track farewell of British great Sir Mo Farah. The Championships achieved an official Guinness World Record for the number of tickets sold with over 705,000 recorded while over 150,000 spectators lined a landmark filled marathon course in the city. With the IAAF World Championships taking place in London, this meant that both the IAAF Congress and Gala Dinner were also held in the Capital. White Light was called upon to provide technical solutions on each event.

   This year’s IAAF World Championships London 2017 were held from 4^th – 13^th August and saw 2,200 athletes from 203 nations compete. The official opening of the IAAF Congress, which featured a Gala Dinner, took place at London’s Tate Modern on Tuesday 1^st August and welcomed more than 200 of the IAAF’s 214 Member Federations. WL’s Senior Accounts Manager Dominic Yates comments: “The official opening was presented by IAAF President Lord Sebastian Coe and had some extremely high-profile guests in attendance. It took place in Turbine Hall of Tate Modern; a space we are now extremely familiar with due to our approved supplier status”.

   For the opening Gala Dinner, WL was called upon to provide the full production support. With a team of 25 technicians, led by Project Manager Martin Strods, the company supplied the lighting, audio, rigging and scenery. Dominic states: “We drew on our extensive inventory to help create an unforgettable start to this year’s IAAF Congress. For the lighting, we drew on the Martin MAC Viper Performances and MAC Auras, CORE Lighting ColourPoints all controlled via a Grand MA2. We also supplied the audio system which consisted of the EM Acoustics HALO C Line Array, the EM 81s, 121s and 218s speakers along with Shure Radio microphones. For the content that was being relayed as part of the speeches, we drew on our Christie 4K30 Boxer Projectors as well as providing 2 x 95” Panasonic Plasma screens to ensure all of the delegates felt part of the evening”.

   Regarding timescale, WL installed the lighting and audio system the previous evening, whilst they had 45 minutes before the actual event to fly the projection screens and set up all elements on the floor of the Turbine Hall. Dominic states: “The Turbine Hall is in constant use, as it was during the day of the event, so we had to plan intricately to ensure we could turn up at 6pm and have everything ready for that evening”.

   Following the opening Gala Dinner, the IAAF then held their 2017 Congress at ExCeL on 2^nd – 3^rd August. During the two days, they welcomed more than 800 international delegates from more than 200 member federations. Lord Sebastian Coe once again opened proceedings. Dominic states: “It was a busy few days with both projects running concurrently. The Congress was essentially a two-day conference in which the IAAF could review their previous year and look at putting forward proposals to their future constitutions”.

   Such was the scale of the event that WL worked in three of the ExCeL spaces – the main auditorium, the Capital Hall and the Capital Suites. A team of 20 were led by crew chiefs Hadyn Williams and Tony Simpson, with Mark Cuniffe and Quentin Jarman providing the lighting design.

   Dominic comments: “In order to realise Mark and Quentin’s design, we drew on 110 x SGM P5 Floods, 70 x ETC ColourForce 12s, 55 x ETC ColourForce 72s, 22 x Martin Mac III Performances and 16 x Martin Mac Viper Performances. This was all controlled via a Grand MA 2 Control System. This was all flown from nearly 100 motors and 420m of Prolyte H30V Truss”.

   Both the Gala Dinner and Congress were huge successes; prefacing what would be an extremely successful IAAF World Championship London 2017. Dominic states: “It was fantastic to be involved with two major IAAF events that both received global recognition. It was a busy three days but our resources and equipment ensured we delivered everything on time and to our client’s exact specifications”.

3. White Light Supplies CSJ Awards at Central Hall Westminster

   The drinks reception in the Library.

   The CSJ Awards celebrate and reward the work of voluntary organisations who are not only helping people to turn their lives around but who are also implementing innovative ways to address and prevent the root causes of poverty. This year they were held at Central Hall Westminster. As the venue’s Production Service Partner, White Light provided the complete technical solutions.

   The CSJ Awards took place on Tuesday 21^st March and were organised by the Centre of Social Justice. Jonjo Glynn, WL’s Venues Director, comments: “The CSJ Awards is a fantastic event and we really wanted to make use of the brilliant spaces at Central Hall to create an unforgettable evening”.

   When guests arrived, they entered the foyer area where they were greeted by digital signage featuring a custom awards animation. They were then lead into the Library for a drinks reception before the main event which took place in the Lecture Hall.

   Jonjo states: “We essentially had creative freedom with this project so offered full themed lighting throughout. Whether it was the drinks reception, the awards presentation or even the performance from Ruth Brown from The Voice UK, each section of the evening had a dedicated look”.

   As part of the technical support, WL utilised Martin Aura XB LEDs, CORE Lighting ColourPoints, ETC Source Fours and Showline SL Strips. The company also provided full audio support for the various presentations and speeches. This included EM Acoustic HALO C Loudspeakers, Shure microphones and a Yamaha QL1 Mixer.

   In the Lecture Hall, WL supplied a Christie Projector for the various video presentations which took place throughout the evening. The company also built a custom-made set.

   Jonjo adds: “Due to the popularity of Central Hall, we had literally one hour to set up in the Library space. Therefore we had to ensure that everything was fully prepared and ready for installation to maximise on the limited amount of time we had”.

   Winners on the evening included Auditory Verbal UK, who took the CSJ Model of Excellence Award, The Clink, who won the CSJ Social Enterprise Award whereas charities Steps2Recovery, Red Balloon and Invisible Walls Wales also received accolades. Presenters on the night included Jeremy Paxman, Andy McNab, Martin Lewis and Iain Duncan Smith.

   Jonjo adds: “What was great about this event was that it showcased how all of the spaces within Central Hall can be utilised to host any type of event. The combination of magnificent architecture and state-of-the-art technology  means we are able to offer a unique location for any occasion held within Central London”.
