As an organisation which has signed up to the Mental Health Charter, White Light is constantly looking for ways in which we can openly discuss and raise the awareness of mental health. We offer our staff mental health training, web resources with useful links and contact numbers along with two Mental Health First Aiders at our base in SW19. One of our Project Managers, Luke Hance, has recently decided to walk 80km along the Great Wall of China in order to raise money for the Mental Health Foundation. As a company, we have agreed to support Luke’s challenge and are now encouraging others to do the same.

The Mental Health Foundation is the UK’s charity for everyone’s mental health. With prevention at the heart of what they do, the charity aims to find and address the sources of mental health problems. The organisation relies solely on public donations and grant funding to deliver events and campaigns promoting good mental health for all. Throughout the year, the charity hosts a range of events and incentives in order to raise both funds and awareness for mental health; with the Great Wall of China Trek being one of these.

The Great Wall of China Trek takes place from 13th – 22nd October 2018. This 10 day trek allows Mental Health supporters to go on a life-changing adventure along one of the Seven Wonders of the World while at the same time raise vital funds. Those taking part on the walk will be able to trek along the stony, steep and historic Wall as it passes through hills, mountains and farmland.

Luke comments: “Good mental health is so important to our everyday life and yet it’s still not as openly discussed and acknowledged as much as physical health. As someone who knows many people who have experienced difficulties with their own mental health, it felt important to me to take on this challenge. We work in a demanding industry where people work long hours on high pressure, challenging projects. It is easy to forget how emotionally draining this can be”.

Luke will take on the Great Wall of China Trek with Leigh Porter, who frequently works with WL as a freelance Production Manager. Luke explains: “The trek itself is extremely challenging; particularly when you consider that it’s spread across ten days.  I need to raise a minimum sponsorship of £3,500 in order to take part”.

As part of its continued effort to raise awareness around mental health, WL has generously donated in order to provide Luke with a strong starting point. The pair are now looking for other organisations to support their important cause.

WL’s Managing Director Bryan Raven comments: “Mental Health is an important issue that is finally getting discussed and this is something we want to encourage. Luke is doing a fantastic thing by going out to China and raising money for a vital cause which is something we obviously want to get behind. We are now hoping that our partners, friends and customers will join us in supporting Luke and acknowledging his efforts over in China”.
