1. White Light On Song for Ivor Novello Awards

   Created in 1956, the Ivor Novello Awards celebrate, honour and reward excellence in song writing and composing. They are named after the legendary composer Ivor Novello and represent the pinnacle of musical achievement and peer recognition in the music industry. Sponsored by PRS, previous winners include John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Adele, Phil Collins and Eric Clapton. Having supplied the lighting equipment for the past several years, WL was called upon once again for this year’s ceremony.

   The Ivor Novello Awards 2017 took place on Thursday 18^th May at the Grosvenor House, London.  The lighting designer was Quentin Jarman, who comments: “I have worked on the Ivor Novello show for twenty years now and it’s always a great occasion. For the music industry, it’s a unique celebration of song writing and the craft behind this”.

   For the Awards, Quentin’s brief was to create a lighting design that matched the colours of the screen graphics that would be played throughout the show. He states: “Whenever an award was presented, this was accompanied by a series of video sequences on a huge screen behind the stage. My role was to ensure my lighting and animated video images matched these and that the event had an exciting yet coherent feel to it”.

   

   Prior to the show, Quentin was given four clear colour references so that he was aware of the different feels he had to create. He comments: “I used moving monochrome video clips from the ArKaos Media Server and subtracted colour elements in order to get the exact shade I required”.

   Alongside this, Quentin drew on WL’s extensive hire inventory to create his perfect rig for the show. This included a wall of 25 Clay Paky Sharpys set between WL’s LED fusion battens. Quentin states: “Alongside creating a design which matched the video content, I also had to ensure this was flexible for when the winners walked on stage. For the various award presentations, these sequences had to be loud and pervade a concert type feel, which is where the Sharpys came in useful”.

   Unlike the majority of award ceremonies, the Ivor Novello Awards take place during the daytime. As a result, this meant that Quentin did not have the luxury of a full day of set-up time. Rather, the load in took place at 2am and the first technical rehearsals were at 8am. The dress rehearsal commenced at 11am before the guests arrived at 12:30pm.

   

   To prepare for such a short time-frame, Quentin visited WL’s London base and spent two days at the company’s state-of-the-art studio facility Studio15. He states: “By using the Studio15 facilities, I was able to pre-build the fusion LED battens as well as programme the desk and media server. As there was very little time on site, I needed everything in place for the ceremony so I could just show up and be ready to go”.

   Winners this year included Jarvis Cocker, Bill Withers, Florence Welch and Gary Numan. Grime artist Skepta won the prestigious Songwriter of the Year Award.

   Quentin adds: “This was another great awards ceremony that was very well received by all those in attendance. The Ivors are always a very unique show for me to work on personally and I am very grateful to WL for all of their support throughout”.

2. d3 and BlackTrax Seminar to be Held at Studio15

   The d3 on-set projection mapped TV studio for ITV Sport.

   Following a range of successful open days with manufacturers from across the globe, WL will be joining forces with d3 Technologies, BlackTrax and BAJT for an exclusive seminar held at our state-of-the-art Studio15. This will be a fantastic opportunity to hear from experts first hand and discover the different technical and creative possibilities that can be achieved with the d3 workflow.

   The event takes place on Tuesday 7th March and will allow attendees to see how projects such as the projection mapping for ITV Sport studios, Lady Gaga’s performance at the Grammys and the FAI World Air Games in Dubai were achieved.

   

   Andrew Gordon, Director of Business Development at CAST Software

   Speakers on the day are some of the most influential people working in the industry. This includes David Bajt, who is Director of BAJT. BAJT specialises in realising complex video installations within a wide range of disciplines including stage designs, live broadcast, corporate events, architecture and sculptural installations. The company uses d3 on a variety of projects, including Lady Gaga at the Grammys and the Fabergé display in Harrods.

   Joining David will be Andrew Gordon, Director of Business Development at CAST software. Andrew will be providing an insight into BlackTrax, the real-time motion tracking system. The integration of BlackTrax with d3 allows users to track an object’s position, movement, speed and rotation all at the same time, in real-time, pushing new creative boundaries and taking projects to a whole new level. The seminar will hear Andrew offer an oversight on how the two seamlessly come together.

   

   Sarah Cox, d3’s Regional Sales Manager

   Finally, Sarah Cox, d3’s Regional Sales Manager, will discuss how d3 is being used on some of the largest and most complicated global shows, events and installations, as well as smaller productions in theatre, architainment and fixed installations.

   Andy Hook, WL’s Technical Solutions Director, comments: “The day is a fantastic opportunity for anyone interested in seeing what can be accomplished using the revolutionary d3 technology; particularly when integrated using both BlackTrax and the expertise of BAJT. The boundaries of what can be achieved with project mapping are constantly being pushed, as seen when we supplied the first-ever d3 on-set projection mapped TV studio for ITV Sport. We’re delighted to be hosting an event that showcases the potential that video mapping now has”.

3. White Light Kicks Off Demo Days with K-array

   The K-array open day allowed attendees immediate access to the latest equipment.

   In association with 2B Heard, White Light recently hosted a K-array Installation Open Day at its state-of-the-art studio facility Studio15. The Open Day allowed those in attendance to experience equipment from K-array’s product range and ask questions to industry experts. The day marked one of many that WL will be hosting over the next few months in partnership with some of the technical industry’s leading manufacturers.

   The K-array Installation Open Day took place on 10^th January and was aimed specifically at architects, designers, consultants and specialist installation companies. The products on display included the KZ12 Mini Line Array Speaker, KV50 Ultra Flat Line Speaker along with the KAN200 Anakonda to name but a few.

   Both Dave Wooster and Sam Nakivell from 2BHeard were also on hand to not only demonstrate the equipment but also answer any questions from those in attendance.

   Lee Dennison, WL’s Head of Business Development, comments: “The Open Day allowed those with a vested interested to come along and experience the latest K-array equipment; something they wouldn’t have had the chance to receive elsewhere. This proves invaluable when considering which product to draw on in real-world application”.

   The K-array Demo Day was the first of many that WL intends on hosting throughout the year. Lee adds: “We have strong relationships with some of the leading global audio, lighting and video manufacturers; many of which choose WL as their exclusive UK distributor. It made sense for us to hold an event which could showcase their latest products and allow those working in the industry to learn more about these”.

   A Shure Wireless Mastered Session held in Studio15.

   Lee states: “We want to use each Demo Day as an opportunity to really engage with those working in the industry and hear what they want and how we can work with the manufacturers to provide this. It’s an extremely friendly, relaxed atmosphere which is open to anyone”.

   All of the upcoming Demo Days will take place in WL’s Studio15. Having opened just over a year ago, the space has been in constant use, with the 120m² dedicated rehearsal space, editing suites and green rooms offering the complete package for any technical event.

   Lee comments: “As an organisation, having a facility such as Studio15 is an unbelievable asset. The studio space is the perfect environment in which to hold Demo Days. Not only are we immediately accessible from Central London, but have the resources on site to ensure each manufacturer has the exact support that they need to fully demonstrate their products.

   He adds: “Every Demo Day we’ve held so far has been greatly received and we hope this will continue as we work with other manufacturers throughout 2017”.
