  1. White Lights Goes Into The Woods with UCL

Comments Off on White Lights Goes Into The Woods with UCL

Into The WoodsThe UCL Musical Theatre Society offers top-quality performance, production, volunteering and social opportunities for the students of UCL. Every academic year the society puts on a variety of shows, including two large-scale productions. This year, one of these was Into the Woods which was performed at the Shaw Theatre as part of the Union’s Performance Season. With a strong history of supporting student productions, White Light was called upon to provide the lighting equipment.

The lighting designer for the show was Alex Forey. He comments: “I became involved with the production as I am part of the UCL Stage Crew which is responsible for everything technical that happens on every UCL Show. The director’s vision for the show was for it to be set in a post-apocalyptic world. The set design was very industrial with lots of exposed aluminium and barbed wire so it was my job to support that vision with lighting, creating a magical environment”.

Into The WoodsAlex designed the rig for UCL’s whole four-week season at the Shaw. As a result, it had to be very versatile. He explains: “Due to the required versatility, the rig is very mover and LED heavy. I picked the VL1100TS for its versatility as a front-of-house workhorse; with the tungsten dimming curve and shutters being particularly important for Into the Woods. Similarly, the gobos and rich colour mixing was also helpful for the live music and dance. I also drew on MAC Quantum Washes for their zoom range, brightness and saturated colours, along with MAC Aura XBs to add some versatility in terms of focus positions and specials.

He adds: “The ever-reliable Lustr was used for colour-changing face light whereas the newer ColourSource Spots with Fresnel adaptors were used for colour changing downlight. There were also 30 x Source Fours for general cover front of house along with 2 x LOOK Solutions Unique Hazers and a Viper NT”.

As with a lot of student productions, one of the biggest challenges facing Alex was time. He states: “As these productions are obviously fitted around our own studies, we have to use time as efficiently as possible! We only had three days to get in, focus, plot and then tech what is a three hour musical. In order to save time when we were at the venue, I visited WL’s warehouse the week before to conduct some gear prep along with colour matching between the various fixture types”.

Into The WoodsThe season runs until 10th March. Alongside Into the Woods, the season includes Electra, a UCL Drama Society Show, and Exhibition, the Dance Society’s big annual showcase. The other shows are lit by a variety of UCL Stage Crew members, including Alex who has lit 4 of the 22 dance pieces.

Alex comments: “It’s been fantastic to work on Into the Woods along with the whole season; especially in a venue such as The Shaw Theatre. Thanks also to WL, in particular Jim Dewhirst and Jonathan Haynes, for their support throughout”.

WL’s Business Development Manager Jonathan Haynes comments: “We are delighted to have been able to work closely with Alex and all of the UCL Stage Crew team on this fantastic season. While we still remain the leading lighting supplier to West End theatre, we are also passionate about supporting student shows which often feature the next generation of lighting designers and theatre practitioners”.

ER Productions is an award-winning laser show and laser system design specialist with credits spanning high profile events, advertising, television and international concert tours. They have worked with some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry including Jeff Lynne’s ELO, Robbie Williams, Metallica, Ariana Grande and Calvin Harris to name but a few. With their work seen on a global scale, they need to ensure that they supply their clients with the very latest technology. Over the past few years, they have approached White Light to provide them with the very latest haze and smoke machines; which includes a recent investment in a range of Look Solutions products.
ER Productions is based in the UK with offices in Spain, Australia and the USA. Marc Webber, co-founder of ER Productions, comments: “As a company, we work on a whole range of projects including concert tours, festivals, club performances and even branded events. While we are known predominately for our laser shows, a large aspect of these is the haze and smoke required to accentuate the beam profile of lasers. As a result, we are always on the lookout to grow our existing stock and seek out new products”.

ER Productions have worked closely with WL for many years now. Marc states: “We have worked with White Light for over a decade – I even remember drawing on their services when they were still based in Parsons Green! Therefore, when we were recently looking to increase our stock of Viper Deluxe and Unique Haze Machines, we knew they were the company to go to”.
The VIPER deLuxe and Unique 2.1 Hazer are both products from Look Solutions, a fog machine specialist based in Germany. The VIPER deLuxe unites a powerful 2600-Watt fog generator and a 400-Watt fan in a robust flight-case. The Unique 2.1 is a haze machine offering minimal warming time, low fluid consumption and even more silent working. It also offers several desired effects from the finest mist to a thick haze.
Antony Vine, White Light’s Business Development Manager, comments: “I spoke with Marc and listened to what the company required in terms of fog machines. As we stock an extensive range of Look Solution products for both hire and sales purposes, we are aware of their reliability and what they can achieve”.

This latest investment means that ER Productions now has a significant inventory of Look Solutions products. Marc adds: “Our Look Solutions stock now ranges over 230 units including the deLuxe and Unique Haze along with the Power Tiny, Viper NT and Orka. Due to lasers and smoke having to work in harmony, it’s vital that we are completely confident in the products we purchase and that we know they are going to deliver the exact effects we need”.
Alongside the recent sale to ER Productions, WL has also supplied Look Solutions products to the West End productions of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and Matilda, the latest UK tour of Miss Saigon, the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre Season and the Bournemouth Council Arts by the Sea Festival.
Antony comments: “As a company who supplies technical solutions to the entertainment industry, we always champion products that we feel will benefit our clients. As seen with Look Solutions, these have been used on a range of high-profile projects and have managed to deliver on each one. With such an extensive stock of Look Solution products, we know that ER Productions will be able to offer their own clients as many options as possible”.
Marc concludes: “WL has been extremely accommodating and professional in all of our dealings with them and we are grateful for their help with our recent purchase”.
