  1. Charlie Morgan Jones: When in Lockdown…

Charlie Morgan Jones feat Home Office

When WL asked me to write this blog, I wasn’t exactly sure what it should be or, how honest I would be!  What crazy times.  Right now I should be sat in the opera house at Longborough with my favourite collaborators and friends creating the beautiful worlds of Wagner’s Die Walküre.  Instead, I’m sitting on my bed (which is now my office space) listening to High School Musical – yes ladies and gentlemen, it’s reached ‘that stage’ of Lockdown.

All of us in the theatre industry (and countless others too) are in the same boat.  No.  Different boats.  But the same sh**ty sea.  As I type, another friend has had their tour (due to continue post-Covid) cancelled.  It’s devastating.

BUT.  Whilst the best minds in our industry are working out how to get us out of this mess, I thought I’d tell you a little of what I’ve been trying to do in Lockdown to keep myself occupied and sane.  I’ve by no means mastered it, and can now officially recite every episode of Friends and Frasier by heart, but I’m doing what we’re all doing…our best.

Those of you who know me will know that – asides from theatre, which runs in my veins – I have a couple of…how shall we say…obsessions.  Namely, planes and music.  Let’s start there!

    CMJ Flight Simulator

Since I can remember I’ve loved airplanes; travelling on them, being in airports, the smell, the sound, but most of all – flying them.  I was an Air Cadet (CORPORAL JONES WOULD YOU BELIEVE?!), and was lucky enough to pilot light aircraft regularly for many years when I was younger.  After Uni, I focussed on my career and let flying slide (apart from all the trips for work), but during this pause-of-the-world I’ve spent many a day flying ‘shorthaul’ routes in bigger planes on a wonderful iPhone app called Infinite Flight.  If you’ve no interest in aviation it must sound like THE most boring pastime, but it’s made me very happy.  Setting it all up takes FOREVER – serious new respect for pilots – but forever passes the time.  I use a website to give me a flightplan and everything – very professional*.

*Never let me fly a real plane with actual fare paying passengers – tea and coffee everywhere.

    CMJ Playing the Piano

When I’m not busy ‘flying’ between Gatwick and Copenhagen (wonderful, wonderful Copenhagen!) I’ve spent more time at my piano than ever before.  I’ve always dabbled…poorly…but it turns out practicing an instrument really does make you better.  (I owe a thousand apologies to my school cello teacher for that.)  My sight reading has always been okay, but now I can confidently sit down at the keys and, as long as it’s in C or F, bash out some semblance of a tune!  Lucky [read tolerant] neighbours that I have, eh!?

Before ETC released Augment3d for Eos on Mac (thank you for that – it’s a joy!) I had to try and get my creative fix elsewhere, so I turned to making silly videos that I hoped would make other people laugh…they mostly made me laugh, and that was good enough.  I’ve become what I can modestly describe as a whizz on iMovie – honestly – Spielberg, give my agent a buzz – I’m available for your next editing gig!

Asides from keeping myself busy (I’m an only child, I’ve had practice!) it’s been really important to stay in touch with my family and friends.  Zoom has been a godsend, as well as Skype, FaceTime, WhatsApp Video and Teams…gosh…I didn’t ever think I’d become tech savvy!  LOOK AT ME NOW!  I miss being in a room with my best friends and larking around, but this video malarkey is a good substitute…for now.  It’s important for me to remember that this isn’t the ‘new normal’, it’s the ‘new temporary’.  We will all be together again.

It sounds like I’m winning at lockdown…I’ve taken my German learning more seriously, I’m exercising, I’m drinking less and I’m excitedly planning future operas…but it would be a bare faced lie if I said it was easy.  I miss other humans terribly.  I miss the looks you can share with someone over a table of 10 that you can’t in a video conference.  I could list an infinite number of things I miss – but we’d all end up on a Zoom crying into (and ultimately short circuiting) our laptops.

    Skype Supper

Hardest of all, my Mum is incredibly high risk, so I haven’t been able to see my parents for quite some time.  I miss them like I can’t express.  But twice a week we have ‘Skype Supper’, and eat at the same time and talk nonsense.  It’s saved me.

Some days are really tough, and motivation is not to be found.  It’s like I just can’t be bothered and there’s a big ol’ cloud seemingly hovering just above my flat.  Fortunately they’re few and far between.

Last weekend I ‘unplugged’ for a couple of days – turned off all social media and put my phone down for 48hrs.  I didn’t believe it could help, but actually, it was just nice to be away from all this nonsense for a short while.  I heartily recommend it.

    Right…well…quick…someone tell a joke!

I’m off to finish filming and editing a new silly video that has made me chuckle…a lot.  This one has props (I’m well and truly pushing the boat out…

There’s no right way or wrong way to do Lockdown…but all this has certainly worked for me.

How I can’t wait for the next time we all get to meet again.  Until then, stay safe, stay sensible, and be creative however you can be.

  2. UK Live Performance Production Declares Climate & Biodiversity Emergency

The ABTT recently launched LIVE PERFORMANCE PRODUCTION DECLARES – a public declaration of our planet’s environmental crises and a commitment from everyone working in the presentation of live performance, operating a place of entertainment or supplying productions to take positive action in response to climate breakdown and biodiversity collapse. As an organisation always considering the environmental impact of our work and the ways in which we can make our operation as sustainable as possible, we are delighted to be one of the first signatories for this vital declaration.

Whilst we are currently not sure as to when live events will return, this declaration wants to ensure that, when they do, every event is run as resourcefully as possible. In an industry that often gets criticised for its carbon footprint, the ABTT wants us all now, as a collective, to think about how we will run our buildings, create our performances as well as source and manage our resources in order to serve our communities as indivisible elements of a larger, constantly regenerating and self-sustaining system. As one of the sectors that has a huge influence on both the economical and social fabric of the UK, Live Performance Production must lead the way in promoting the transformation to a circular economic model by demonstrating positive measures in its own practice. The declaration is suggesting that, for everyone working in the presentation of live performance, operating a place of entertainment or supplying productions, they must try and do so without breaching the earth’s ecological boundaries. The research, technology and solutions exist for us to begin this transformation to a circular model now, but there must be a collective will from across the industry in order to present live performance in a way that has a more positive impact on the world around us.

The declaration can be read in full and signed here.

WL’s Managing Director Bryan Raven comments: “We are delighted to be backing this incredibly important declaration and thank the ABTT for pursuing this worthy cause within the midst of everything else that is currently happening. These are strange and uncertain times and, in all honesty, we are unsure what the fabric of live events will look like when they return. That said, a large part of getting back on our feet will be about ensuring we adhere to good practice and that what we are helping to create on-stage has an equally positive effect off it. The declaration put forward is ambitious yet also clear and practical and we look forward to many other organisations joining us in our continued efforts to make our industry as environmentally friendly as possible”.

  3. Kindness Spotlight: Phil Gladman

In just a few short weeks of adjusting to life during COVID-19, we have all learned a great deal about resilience, collaboration and our ability to adapt in challenging times. This time is slowly becoming a testament of the strength of our core values (mainly adaptability, friendliness and dependability). For this #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek, we thought we’d share how some of the WL team have been keeping busy during this time. Many are contributing to their community by joining local volunteering groups and supporting the NHS scheme providing chat and phone support, as well as carrying out other tasks and errands.

Wise words from Phil Gladman, WL Project Manager for Venues

As another one our core values is friendliness, we are strong believers that positive messages are what we all need right now, so we wanted to share a particularly heartwarming volunteering story from Phil Gladman, WL Project Manager for Venues. By joining his local village and the Hertfordshire Council volunteer groups, Phil has started running errands for some of his vulnerable  neighbours. “I’ve recently returned from my first volunteering shift for Buntingford County Council where I helped out one of my neighbours in getting prescriptions for her and her family along with a small bit of shopping. I didn’t mind queuing outside the chemist or outside Sainsbury’s for the loaf of bread they wanted. I felt very thankful that I am not having to self isolate and I am therefore able to help out my neighbour (or indeed anyone who needs it) where I can. They were very grateful and it costs nothing to help out.”

Phil’s experience has been so positive that he’s decided that he wants to keep volunteering beyond the pandemic, he says: “It has also made me realise that after all this horrible pandemic is over, I’m going to continue to look after not only my family but others who need it. Remember, we only have one life so make sure you spend it wisely. The weather was chilly (back in March), but this simple act of kindness has made me all warm inside.”

  4. Meet ELP: The New Faces Helping WL Deliver Broadcasts Across the Globe

VE Day Concert hosted by the BBC – Supplied by ELP & WL

Earlier this year, WL announced that it had formed a strategic partnership with ELP. With over forty years’ industry experience, ELP has an unrivalled reputation for providing lighting technology and production management support to broadcasts and live events. Their work over the past few months alone includes BBC 1’s General Election coverage, BBC’s Young Musician of the Year, various commercials for ABF Pictures as well as the VE Day Celebrations which aired on BBC1 last Friday. With ELP now delivering these exciting projects as a division of WL, we thought we’d introduce some of the individuals who have joined our team and look at the knowledge and experience which they have brought to the company.

    Meet: Darren Fletcher

Darren Fletcher – ELP Sales Director

After studying for a HND in Electrical Engineering, I immediately threw myself into the world of work and joined Playlight Hire in Manchester. Playlight was known for providing the “clever” dark art of lighting control (dimmers and consoles) to film and TV suppliers and this was an area that really interested me. We soon gained a reputation for providing all the latest technology to broadcasters such as BBC and ITV, which saw us introduce scrollers and the first wave of moving light technology. This would actually see me spend many years operating most of the early consoles on gameshows and big Saturday night LE shows such as Stars in Their Eyes. Playlight then formed a Film and TV division, which allowed me to gain even more experience working on film and drama sets, where I’d be given the glamorous titles of “Gaffer” and “Best Boy”. These were all important learning curves and I eventually became our main project manager for TV and Outside Broadcasts.

When Playlight ceased trading in 2002, its assets were purchased by ELP and HSL. I was asked to head up ELP’s Northern operation by founder Ronan Willson as they were doing the same type of work as Playlight. I happily obliged and worked on a 50/50 basis of office and location work, consisting of small PSC shoots to filming the largest Cathedrals in the country. I even worked as Lighting Designer on the odd occasion, such as the ITV Gary Barlow Special from Camp Bastion. After a few years, I became Sales Director of ELP, managing some of their largest projects and events across the globe. I now find myself entering an exciting new chapter as we bring the ELP Broadcast Lighting brand into the WL family.  This amalgamation will allow ELP to draw on WL’s strength and knowledge in many other areas, not to mention their huge equipment inventory and expert staff, whilst ultimately ensuring that we offer our existing and new customers the very best service possible.

    Meet: Robert ‘Sinbad’ Dunne

Robert ‘Sinbad’ Dunne – ELP Project Manager (Broadcast)

My interest in lighting actually started back in high school as it seemed much more preferable to be behind the stage as opposed to being stood on it! It was an interest that would continue to grow; to the point where I was working in local theatres and even studied a degree in Electronics. I maintained my interest in lighting throughout university where I first started hiring equipment from Playlight. I got to know the guys so well that I began working for them at weekends during my final year; which is where I gained my nickname Sinbad which has stuck throughout my professional life (this is a Brookside reference for those of you old enough to remember Michael Starke’s character!). I graduated in the summer of 1994 and was told there would be two weeks work for me if I wanted it. These two weeks turned into ten years and during that time, I went from van driver and stores sweeper to assisting on corporate jobs, operating lights at TV studios and working on many outside broadcasts; from church services to parliament openings to Eisteddfods. After Playlight ceased trading, I went freelance for a few years before eventually reuniting with some of the old team (including Darren) under ELP. Since then, I’ve continued to work on countless TV projects from single camera news bulletins to Papal visits, music festivals to Royal weddings and everything in between. I’m looking forward to now bringing all of my experience and expertise to WL and working with their team.

    Meet: Matt Smith

Matt Smith – ELP Project Manager (Broadcast)

I actually had quite a unique start to my career in the sense that I began it as a musician! In a somewhat natural step, I found myself becoming a sound engineer in both studio and live settings. This resulted in me getting a job at Playlight where the nature of the role saw me develop a secondary interest in lighting; something which has simply continued to grow over the years and particularly when the company was taken over by ELP. What I love about my role is that it is all-encompassing. Whilst my official title is Project Manager, when I’m working on a project, I can also act as the technician, rigger – essentially whatever is needed. What I also love is the huge variety of projects I get to work on; whether its studio television programmes, live festivals or outside broadcasts. No two days are ever the same! Whilst I’ve worked in the industry for over twenty years now, my passion for delivering ambitious, innovative projects simply continues to grow and I’m really excited to continue doing this with WL.

  5. Celebrating Many Years of the Wonders of Natural History…

White Light (WL) and the Natural History Museum have had a partnership that spans over 20 years, so we are delighted to wish one of London’s most iconic venues, a happy 139th anniversary!

Located in South Kensington, the Natural History Museum is renowned for its magnificent architecture and world-famous collections, making it a highly-sought after venue for any event. To celebrate its anniversary, we wanted to share some of our fondest memories of special events and collaborations with the Museum.

Hope the Blue Whale and Hintze Hall Reopening

Back in July 2017, we were very proud to provide full technical support for the glittering re-opening of Hintze Hall at the Natural History Museum, marking one of the museum’s largest transformations since 1881.The highly-anticipated event, which was attended by more than 1,000 guests, saw the grand unveiling of Hope, a stunning 25.2 metre real blue whale skeleton. As a long standing approved supplier to the Natural History Museum, we were called upon to provide the complete technical solutions for the occasion. You can watch our highlights video from the evening below and read more about this here.

Sharing an Intimate Gig for Coldplay’s Album Launch

Last November, Coldplay held an intimate one-off concert following the launch of their latest album ‘Everyday Life’. For this occasion, WL was appointed to provide all lighting solutions and power distribution, as well as manage the staging and crowd management barriers.

Thanks to our established position on the Museum’s approved suppliers list and intricate knowledge of the venue, we were considered the expert choice for a special event of this nature. Read more about it here.

    Christmas Celebrations

White Light has been providing technical support for the NHM’s Christmas party run for over four years. Each year there is an increasing demand for festive celebrations in the Earth Hall, making it one of the most iconic party venues in London. You can read about NHM Christmas parties here.

Wildlife Photographer of the Year Awards

Each year the museum hosts the prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the Year Awards. This event celebrates the best wildlife photographers from all over the world. Back in 2015 we provided lighting support throughout the evening. The brief was to highlight the spectacular architecture of the building and enhance the tone of prestige and recognition for this celebratory evening. You can read coverage of the event from Light and Sound America here.

    *BONUS* 2020 Suppliers Evening

Finally, a bonus moment from last February, when we attended the museum’s supplier networking evening. This year the museum hosted a scavenger hunt around the building, where we learnt a great deal about their fascinating content and collections, while enjoying our very own ‘night at the museum’ experience. Team WL were very happy to come in third place – thank you…

Thank you for all of these wonderful memories and once again we wish you many happy returns. We cannot wait to work together again.

  6. Three Silver Linings during Lockdown from White Light

For those of you who celebrate Easter, this year was undoubtedly very different from the norm. With restaurants closed and social gatherings banned, most families and friends had to rely on apps such as Zoom in order to virtually come together and still try and make the most of a very surreal situation. One person in particular who had an unusual bank holiday was our Facilities Manager Gary Riehl, who found himself heading into WL’s Head Office on Easter Sunday in order to print some sewing patterns for scrubs urgently needed by the NHS.

On the evening of Saturday 11th, Elizabeth Price sent out a plea to Twitter asking if there were any A0 printers available in the South London area. These would be used to print very particular sewing patterns that could then be used to create scrubs. Elizabeth was making the request on behalf of several local hospitals, including King’s College, Royal Brompton and St Christopher’s Hospice. Perhaps unsurprisingly, upon seeing the Tweet, a lot of our followers began tagging us. Wanting to see just how we could help, we reached out to Elizabeth who informed us they needed 20 sheets printing on A0, which would contain two different patterns. Not only that but these would need printing ASAP due to the fact that they were urgently needed… As such, we began liaising with our Facilities Manager, Gary Riehl, who informed us that we did in fact have the printers capable of printing the sheets. Realising the urgency of the situation, Gary stepped forward and kindly volunteered to head into the office and print out whatever Elizabeth required; giving up his Easter Sunday in the process.

Once Gary arrived at our South Wimbledon base, Elizabeth emailed over the sewing patterns which he was able to immediately print. He then called Elizabeth who was able to arrange a safe, socially-distanced collection and by 6pm the roll of patterns were ready to be distributed to the team of scrub makers.

    Rolls of Printed Patterns

So whilst it was a very different Easter Sunday for WL this year, we’re proud to say this was for a very good reason. We’d like to say a big thank you to Gary for all of his help and for embodying practically all of our core values when assisting Elizabeth and her team.

The handing over of the patterns

To learn more about scrub hubs and the ‘For Love of Scrubs’ Facebook groups which started the movement you can read this piece by Jessica Murray: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/apr/13/volunteers-stitch-together-make-scrubs-for-nhs

WL Truck fleet delivering meals to the NHS

Thanks to Haydn Davison, our Operations Manager, the transport team has also been busy delivering meals to NHS frontline staff. This was a joint initiative with restaurant chain Corbin & King and our fleet of WL have been making deliveries to two hospitals in London. This is something we hope to continue doing over the next few weeks.

The nation has seen several wonderful initiatives designed to show gratitude towards the NHS, including the ongoing #ClapForOurCarers campaign. Last week, the Merton Chamber of Commerce put us in touch with our neighbours at Merton Council and we were delighted to support their participation in #LightItUpBlue by donating blue light filters to help transform the Civic Centre in Morden. Please enjoy some pictures below of the end result.

From all of us at WL, we hope you are keeping well – take care.

Following the latest government announcements this week, the majority of the UK now finds themselves working from home. As such, many people are drawing on video conferencing for the first time; an exercise which can be challenging enough, without the added anxiety and pressure of the current situation we’re all facing.

As a company, we are aware that one of the biggest frustrations with video conferencing is spending so much time setting up the technology and then having to ensure it actually works. Crestron Flex

  10. White Light Wins the IBC2018 Innovation Award

White Light is thrilled to announce that its project with Discovery and Eurosport entitled “Eurosport Cube” has been awarded the  IBC Innovation Award 2018 for Content Creation. The Cube is an immersive, mixed-reality studio built by WL, alongside technical partners disguise and Deltatre, and was utilised throughout Eurosport’s international coverage of the 2018 Olympic Winter Games.

Housed in the International Broadcast Centre in PyeongChang, South Korea, the Cube offered a fully interactive environment in order to analyse the Games’ action. Built entirely from LED display technology and using augmented and virtual reality, it enabled Eurosport experts to interact with their surroundings, telling more engaging stories that explained the technical aspects of the different sports. Coupled with disguise’s media platform, Vizrt and camera tracking solutions, the background of the Cube could be generated to the perspective of the viewer in 3D.

The IBC2018 Innovation awards recognise innovation within the media, entertainment and technology industry and this year celebrate excellence in sport and news, multi-national delivery, new ways of engaging audiences and new business models to maximise revenues.

Michael Lumley, chair of the IBC Innovation Awards judging panel said, “This year’s IBC Innovation Awards shortlist is a real global snapshot of the cutting edge of our industry, with all the hot topics of the moment represented, and entries from practically every corner of the globe”.

“To receive recognition for Best Content Creation from IBC complements the rave reviews the Eurosport cube received from athletes, the broader Olympic family and viewers across Europe throughout the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018.  The cube was a great example of how Discovery helped transform the Olympics viewing experience, demonstrating our dedication to stand out and offer something truly different” concludes Dave Schafer, SVP, Sports Operations & Planning, Discovery. “By working alongside such excellent partners, including White Light and Deltatre, we were able to deliver the cube experience to the highest standard.”
